Gallery: 20250803 Cowan Lake Kayaking

I was reminded, quite by accident, that it was time to be checking out the reportedly massive amount of lotus blooms that can be found on Cowan Lake. Now that things are sufficiently healed, getting the kayak in the water for the first time in years was definitely on the list, and I decided this would be the inaugural kayak outing.

I loaded up the kayak and headed east, navigating my way to the boat ramp off Beechwood Rd where I'd heard it was best to launch and wondered what I'd find when I got there.

I wasn't disappointed! As I rolled past the "road ends in water" sign and down towards the lake, the view opened before me to a massive area of the blooms I was looking for. These are apparently the American Lotus water lilly, and they actually hold a festival to celebrate them. I can see why!

It was a two mile paddle all told. I headed north northeast on the lake and down into what is apparently the exit stream before I ran into a massive log jam and turned around. I can't wait to get back out here for another paddle.
