Hinton, WV - Drone Flight - October 8, 2023
Ever since learning about this old Chesapeake and Ohio rail car and it's accomanying "fireless" engine, I've been trying to find a time to stop and check it out either on the way to, or back from OBX. The timing finally worked out on this last trip!
This car and engine are located in what I believe is a CSX rail yard in Hinton WV. From my research, the car dates from 1942. I have no idea what vintage the engine is. No, I didn't tresspass to get this footage. I know better than to go trekking around a rail yard. The drone was launched and flown from a nearby commercial property of which I was a customer.
If you want to learn more about fireless locomotives, Wikipedia has a pretty good article.
The flight was a challenge, because the winds were at the upper end of what my drone is capable of handling, but I was able to get a good look and some decent video. Enjoy!
Here's a map if you want to check out the car and engine in person (Remember, don't tresspass in the rail yard!): (Google Maps link)
